Seattle Pet Rescue

In the Seattle area, there are many places to rescue a pet - one good place is "Homeward Pet" in Woodinville. Homeward Pet is a no kill, non-profit animal shelter serving the Greater Seattle area.

If you have room in your home, heart and budget for a new friend, PLEASE consider rescuing - and if rescuing, please visit Homeward Pet. here is their website:

Here is a little bit from their website:

20 Years of Animal Rescue and Adoption!
Celebrate our 20th anniversary with us! We were founded in 1990 under the name "Hooterville Pet Safehaus". We started with simple goals: save and re-home cats and dogs and educate the public about spaying and neutering their pets.

In 2002 Hooterville became Homeward Pet Adoption Center. We are one of the largest no-kill shelters in the state of Washington! Each year Homeward helps over 1,300 cats and dogs find their forever home. Where do these animals come from? 40% are owner surrenders and the other 60% are animals we rescue from shelters who euthanize.

We remain small with a staff of 15 (half are part time). And our 200+ volunteers are our backbone (thank you volunteers and donors!). Many of the rescued animals who come to Homeward get more love and attention in our shelter than they have ever known.

Celebrate with us! Our shelter continues to grow and improve. Drop by and get to know us better!

Why Pet Rescue?

There are many, many, dogs and cats (and birds, and so on - rabbits, lizards, you name it!) that are abandoned, sitting in shelters - both public and private. There are also abused, neglected and hurt animals. There are animals of all ages, both genders, all shapes, sizes and colors! With these hard economic times, many people have given up their beloved pets through no fault of their own. They just cannot afford them anymore. It's just sad!

Truth is, there are FAR too many animals for the people who want them and can care for them. That is why we need to emphasize RESCUE instead of BUYING animals!

Puppies and kittens are cute, no doubt, but take a LOT of time, money and patience to train. Puppy mills feed into this "oh, look how cute" demand and have terrible places where inbreeding is rampant, creating warped and damaged animals. PLEASE don't support this!

My wife and I have rescued many animals. Mostly older ones, who are even harder to place. Our hearts break whenever we look, as there are SO MANY that need rescuing. We have gotten tremendous joy and satisfaction from rescuing, and the dogs and cats REALLY seem to know they have been rescued! We have NEVER had a bad rescue and indeed, have TOTALLY fallen in love with our rescued friends!

If you want a specific breed (I like basset hounds, for example) there are MANY dogs available in your breed. Whether collies, retrievers, terriers, you name it; there is a dog for YOU available - usually (and sadly) a dozen or more for you to choose from! Of course, mutts (mixed breeds, if we must!) are excellent for health, lack of allergies and variety of appearance. Whatever you choose, PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE consider rescuing - especially if you have children, as this will set a WONDERFUL example for them for life!

There is also, tragically, no shortage of cats. With our two current rescued dogs, we have a terrific cat, rescued off the streets. She is a doll! Cats are easy to care for, and, to their guardians, VERY affectionate. The "aloof cat" theory is a myth - always a myth to to their guardians and often even to strangers!

As we go forward, I will tell you the stories of our rescues, and post pictures! I will also post the names and addresses of places where I suggest you look for your next special friend. You will NOT be disappointed! Please also feel free to share your stories and pictures and let's do what we can to make this life a better one for our vulnerable, furry friends!

Thank you and stay tuned - there is more coming!
